The Department of Bioengineering was started in CMC-Vellore in 2003 to develop a platform to apply engineering knowledge to healthcare and medical research. Collaboration with a number of departments in the college and hospital is an essential aspect of the department.
The department has an academic program under Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum, which lead to Master of Science in Bioengineering and a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioengineering degrees. These are postgraduate programs in engineering (requiring an undergraduate engineering degree) with an emphasis on application of engineering principles to biology and medicine.
